A Divided Nation: Tinsel Town!

We are reminded daily, if not hourly, by various media outlets as well as many we are in conversation with, that "We are a nation, a house divided...". A nation divided by politics, designating us as either 'red' or 'blue' states...issues of social justice...whether we are complying with mask wearing or railing against any CDC guidelines...those anxiously awaiting a vaccine versus those who have already declared "don't come near me with any needle"...send the kids home from school to their parents (college included) or keep the schools, restaurants, gyms, salons, and other government institutions opened up. Important issues, to be sure. But these pale in importance to others we are now becoming preoccupied with, issues that really have the power to ignite conflict and start a civil war within our households, communities, and across our nation. Issues we will all, in the coming days, have to take a stand on, so we better be ready to fully state our convictions and stand firm.

Thanks, No Thanks...So, we have surpassed the fourth Thursday in November and survived the arguments about whether to shop on Thanksgiving Day or wait until dawn on 'black Friday', with the echoes of both sides of the argument still resonating in our heads. Now we turn to the new issues of the day, calling for our attention...

- Red or Blue?....BULBS! Whether to stay with red, blue, or both when hanging lights on the tree or when you gingerly climb out onto your roof to hang them for all your neighbors to admire...."Look, Harold, the neighbors have strings of both red and  blue on their bushes -- they're a MIXED FAMILY, OMG!" Then, of course, there are those that avoid this conflict altogether by decorating with only clear lights (we can refer to them as the 'transparents')

- Whether to invest in those environmentally friendly LED's that some people find appealing while others experience as visually noxious, or stay with the traditional, screw in bulbs: "I never would have made you as an LED kind of guy -- I don't know if I can keep dating you..."

- Do you move the ornaments hanging on the overloaded bottom branch of the Christmas tree within the dog's reach, or keep junior's self-esteem intact and let him believe he is brilliant? Lots of couples will be hotly debating this in the next few weeks...

-What do you place first and last in your nativity scene and from where do you say the 'wisest men' originate? Religion and politics, passionate issues that have the potential to divide us...

-Most important of all, you will have to at some point in your life take a stand on whether to...'tinsel or not to tinsel'! This has been a strident topic for decades, splitting more families than political parties, union vs. management, or religious affiliation altogether. Predating whether to buy real or artificial...

Add these issues together and  you've got a real Merry Maelstrom...So, let us 🎜Deck the Halls and come together (well, perhaps at a slight distance) and ALL agree that "Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus...there really is a reason for JOY"!
