Gimme A Break!

December 9th: We lost sight of some of the "Right Stuff" as Chuck Yeager passed from our midst, the first to break the sound barrier on October 14th, 1947, traveling over 660 mph (or 1062 kph if  you prefer bigger numbers)...repeating the feat as a 'back set driver' 65 years later to the minute. Decades ago many wondered if it was possible, whether someone traveling at that speed would break up.

Breaking News! Well, kinda: The BBC's morning news today included an update on the Brexit negotiation which, if it's successful, will allow the U.K. to break away from the EU: "...the talks neither broke down nor resulted in a breakthrough...

Breaking into the Olympics: In other news this morning, I heard a proposal to include break dancing in future Olympics. If you question whether this belongs alongside other traditional athletic events, perhaps you should try it. And just maybe it will bring back some judging controversies that I have been missing since the cold war days (where we tuned in as much to see the political 'posturing' as we did the event itself, such as figure skating and gymnastics) -- imagine a Russian judge trying to debate a score with us in the West: "chuvak"! (dude)

Heart Breaking News...3000 lost to COVID in one day, breaking previous one day record...

Heartfelt Appeal: from the CDC and other health care professionals, for all of us to seriously consider a break with tradition, in how we all celebrate Christmas and other holidays just this one year, to avoid coming under their care ourselves, in the presence of a surge, a source of which can now be traced to people refusing to put on the brakes, continuing to 'party hearty' around Thanksgiving, even if away from the bars...

Badly in Need: of a time and place for nurses and other caregivers to take a break, at a time when COVID patients are again coming in at a breakneck pace...as they grow ever so weary and almost at a breaking point.

A New Dawn: We are starting to see some proverbial light at the end of the tunnel, as vaccines are being brought to us at an unprecedented, record breaking pace, a result of a vast network of professionals and herculean efforts...when we can finally again sing together in harmony as one world, "Morning Has Broken".
