Soaking it all in...water, sunshine in abundance, but...
Water, water everywhere... Nor any drop to drink... From "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, published in 1798, a vivid illustration of a situation in which, despite being surrounded by something, you can't benefit from it (i.e., while literally dying of thirst you can't drink of ocean water due to its salinity...well, you can but the results would not be sustaining) --a tragic tease. Or, slightly different wording, in the midst of plenty, you are unable to partake. Fast forward...C. 10-2-21...
Sunshine, sunshine, burning bright... Nor any soul in sight... From an evening walk around my neighborhood, covering about two miles, with pleasant ambient temperature, friendly breeze, accompanied by early fall colors but unaccompanied by those who might enjoy them (did not see one body, nobody!). What gives, where is every bodies?! Apparently not outside enjoying nature, getting Vit. D the natural way, which can only mean one thing...
Hiber-Nation: Of course, early in the time of COVID we were told to "stay at home" and otherwise quarantine. Some took this more literally and to extremes than others, as we were encouraged to stay close to home, but not necessarily INSIDE! When the CDC among others advising us discovered the literal translation, the messaging transitioned to "Get fresh air, get outside and enjoy nature!" As I have written here to you, we also live in the age of the kind of high tech that has many tethered indoors to various screens, but also tech gear, all weather wear, that allows us to stay warm and cool, respectively, depending on your locale, your season...all of which allows us to continue to embrace the great outdoors all year round...so where is everyone?!
Don't be SADs, Mad, out in the cold: An accompanying phenomenon this time of year at least in this geographical region is the increase in the number of people reporting a feeling of 'malaise' among other feelings that collectively add up to SAD -- "Seasonal Affective Disorder", which is instrumentally related to a reduction of direct exposure to sunlight as it becomes less available, and the particular role(s) of Vitamin D...hence, the related increase in folks taking supplements these days, while they also put in a special UV light next to their favorite reading chair when they are sans sunlight. Or, is the truth that we make ourselves less available to "Mr. Sun, Mr. Golden Sun"𝅘𝅥𝅯 ? In addition to endorsing the value of such supplements and special lights, mental health professionals researching all the issues related to SAD (or MAD in some cases) has also found it is not simply the lack of exposure to sunlight but what most of us are not doing when we are staying inside, besides becoming expert couch potatoes... so the value of movement wherever it occurs, especially OUTSIDE!
The age of reason, knows no season: The same folks that were griping it was too hot, that they would get too sweaty (not a problem, see October 10th post), will soon be claiming "Baby, it's cold outside, it's even too cold to work up a sweat..." (not true, depending on how you are dressed, how long you 'stroll'...). So, the truth is that there is never a good time, never a bad time...so now, maybe I'll see you around the neighborhood!
