Re:calibrate - cost of freight, why you're late, what you ate...
"Carry On" A double (at least) meaning, a two-for, as in "go ahead, you're good to go, "stay the course" or, even, in a restaurant, after the waiter left the table, who just brought another (course), which caused a pause in the convo, one encourages the other to pick up where they left off. Well, it's already abundantly clear to you, who have been willing to re-turn here for yet another, I don't need much encouragement to do so; that is, regardless the topic at hand..."he'll find a way to bring it into the sphere of psychological experience, one which we can re-late to individually as well as collectively...take on serious, 'heavy' subjects and find at least some lighter sides to it, as well as take some light-hearted topics and apply them to some semi-serious dimensions of life...it's "both an art and a science" -- subjects that, in addition to how all this stuff adds up, connect all of us, are intimately connected to this time of year around most of the sphere we often re-fer to as "mother earth", which will soon, after a delay, perhaps even a protracted period, be circled, stay the course, one which may have been potted with a (high-tech) protractor, a course which, of course, will also take it and its precious cargo, around "Our" moon...all of which takes on, requires HUGE calibrations...of just what to take (and NOT!), precision timing for the correct launch ("launch" taking on a lot of meaning for corporations as of late)...launch pad being the exact location, whereas our own 'pads' are where many working from home out of choice, or due to a prompt "shelter in place" find themselves in closer proximity to the fridge these days, an oppo to "help yourself" to yet another...see all the "connectivity" here๐? In any case, my response to a dizzying array of "current events" which takes us, finally (as a course within a course) inevitably, irrevocably, whether you're ready-or-not...time to get up, it's time to "Go back to..."
Missed-estimations(?) As in did you miss out because you miss-calculated the time it would take you to get ready ("lay out your clothes the night before...") ready, regardless of it's a place you were a bit ambivalent, equivocating about, giving yourself leeway, 'wiggle room' (see August 18th) or "trip of a lifetime", one where you finally get to re-launch after so many false starts, being put "on hold" for what seems to be an interminably long time, kept you (literally) away from the terminal, WAY beyond six feet...Yep, in this case, context, it's "always better to be early than..." always a few exceptions, can you "Thimk" (featured in September 1st, a big way to think brough to you and me by a "Mr. Little", my fourth/sixth grade teacher, an awesome two-fer) of some...? Which brings to mind, as in a "loose connection", "free association...stream of consciousness" (all of which happen a lot in my wandering, wondering mind, as well as what we learned a lot about in psych classes), how often, fluidly, seamlessly, we are all calculating -- not as in "he really meant to hurt my feelings teacher...", an action of deliberation -- but as in 'calibrating' our thoughts, plan-of-action (getting ready for school, for example๐๐) or even, now that I thimk about it...feelings! (not enough emoji's to go around here). As in a type of mathematical activity that takes place from dawn to dusk, one where so many of you out there, have ostensibly found distasteful, completely turned off to, whether due to early experience with boredom ("rote"๐) or because of some sort of negative psychological 'conditioning', the latter which could even approach, approximate one which becomes reflexive, a classical example of "classical conditioning", as in Pavlov's dogs, another subject matter already well covered in earlier post(s), which you'll just have to either take my word for or go and re-search...types of calculations that help you plot, well before setting off...a process that's as "old as the hills" and one which, for some seem to elude them, as in "math is too abstract, mysterious" and to others beyond their reach -- "it's a myth that I can learn math..."
"Wanna Bet?!" First off, doing calculations, calibrations predate even the Greeks (w-a-y-y-y before we had the bulky first iteration that I had access to late in high school and now accompany us throughout our days, all the way into "what you'll need for retirement"), who brought us many philosophers, early astronomers, mathematicians, many of whom also represented early 'cross trainers' in that they did not tend to specialize, concern themselves strictly to one subject, who would frown on the recent/current trends that seem more like educational 'silos' which, to their satisfaction, have become to realize the value, critical importance when attempting to get students of all ages to "THIMK", have been trying to find ways to break down the artificial walls between subjects, ways to connect them, as in 'seamless, continuous, fluid...' ๐๐...If the Greeks and their Mythology (one of my favorite subtopics on our HS English syllabus) did not illustrate this for us, the most recent iterations of athletics (no, not E-sports, which is huge itself now), one which pretty much ensures their strong presence in our society, as in omni-present...depending on what you are watching or listening to, if you are a 'target', it won't take long and you too can experience the thrills, the spills, all the way from the "Thrill of Victory to the agony of defeat" featured every weekend for a lot of us growing up, via the "Wide World of Sports", experienced both on and off the field of play, the latter being more of a 'vicarious' one...but now, the rise and fall experienced in both individual and team pursuits, rising to such heights as Mt. Olympus (home of the Greek gods, created after the war between the Olympians and Titans...talk about rivalries!) to somewhere "down under" (sorry Aussies), both of which are well represented not only in what athletes might experience but now, at the courtesy of some new authors you, too can be courtside, as in courting both victory or perhaps even disaster (!) Brought to you, no matter what time of day, whether you yourself are an active participant or more of a spectator, here interpreted as calculating speculator...here comes a new series of...
Sports books! Not only those you and I have traditionally read about our favorite national pastimes, with catchy titles, such as "Best Catch" but here we became a captive audience for a whole new genre, about games that did not find their genesis in Greece, but somewhere not so far away, an area with which there developed some clashing, as in cultures...now represented more by cashing (perhaps even your paycheck๐)...those now brought to us under the veil of "Sportsbooks Online!" courtesy by who else but "Caesar": "Bet up to $1250 on Us/We've got you covered"๐๐...an initial free bet hundreds of ways to win (or lose, my emphasis, sorry Caesar)...same day parlays...best college match-ups...fantasy sports...over-and -under (eventually, inevitably asunder? My emphasis again, on your behalf๐) Talk about cross training, bringing front and center all the 'core' subjects from contemporary ed in grade school, all the way up to what's considered a 'liberal arts education' at the collegiate level ("literature, philosophy, math, social, and physical sciences") ...reflected in such memes as "watch your p's and q's" (or "watch your step"), "Friends, Romans, countrymen..." "A fool and his money"...Collectively, reminding us of the value of learning cross the domains of educational taxonomies, their value in both casual spectating to up close and personal engagements...lest we really get schooled...as Rodney Dangerfield reminds us in "Back to School"..."It's a jungle out there; you gotta' look out for number one, but don't step in number two!" A calculated gamble, to be sure. "Welcome back!"
What's 'In Store' for you: "The case for (teaching?) moral development" and "There's no such thing as a (free) school lunch"
