Re: Exchange of words; word exchangers: Thesaur-us
Coinciding, on occasion: On the occasion that I would be posting about a highly accomplished man, one who not only had "Dr." in front of his name due to his earlier occupation, but then his on-going post-op, pre-occupation -- with thousands of words, word combinations, phrases, topics...all things that "Matter" (one of the VI classes of concepts)...a day that was actually belated, but hopefully still well-received, a day that would also be the occasion of celebrating (once again, coincidentally) one of our favorites that shares his bday with Dr. Roget, and who himself has managed to conjure up many new word usages, images...So, this for me became what we now frequently refer to as...
A Two-fer: A day of celebrating two fine fellows, and in the case of Dr. R, a reference to a reference book that not only contained thousands of words, substitutions, combinations, but also managed to be topical in nature, as in a classification system that (as I posted on 1-21) was inspired, borrowed from, the earlier naturalist Linnaeus ("lineage"???😁) and includes 1,000 concepts (earlier versions included over 1,000 but being a master of symmetry Dr. Roget found a clever way to re-org, the true nature of which re-mains with his😕😔...) all en-compassed by a system that, as I listed here two days ago, starts...and ends...with "A"...which I, as a mnemonic aid, simplify for myself as simply...
"Double A" Or the type of batteries called for in one of the youngster's presents we were celebrating, but also incorporated in the beginning and ending categories of this HUGE word exchange, both of which for me conjured up how we all exchange words on many such occasions...from those that might reflect, as listed in Dr. Roget's system, I. "Abstract Relations" (e.g. after the party, in the parking lot, "Just what did you mean by that remark?!") to those that exude the pure joy subsumed by VI: "Affections"...as in...
"Many Happy Returns, by-gone-it!" While recurrent as a term starting as early as the 18th C., wishing someone "many happy returns of the day" was issued on many occasions, our society and more recent gens have become more selective in using it mostly on the annual occasion marking the day of their birth, as well as finding replacements (e.g., "it's totally yours, dude!") Whereas the age-old question regarding age, is still, at least among our boomer gens, met with, "it's classified😒"
Up-date on ex-change: A cash-less society?! Just couldn't help myself, Thesar-ioulsy😂. In honor of two fine fellows who were celebrated on January 18th: their way with words, commanding presents😁
