SUPER Re:veal (of my own): "In Defense of Anxiety..." The Pro-longue
Yes, I know, that I am using a word to engage you, one that might serve as a 'tickler' ("a device for jogging the memory: a file that serves as a reminder and is arranged to bring matters to...") that probably does not actually reside in your own vast vocabulary. One that, in its more traditional form ("Prologue") might be the fore-runner for many chapters to come which, upon reading, digesting it, might propel you to keep on...turning the pages, at least go on to the "Table of Contents" and then, finally, after what seems to be an unnecessary, even irritating, longer-than-necessary, "Introduction" to a book with several chapters. A word that actually captures the real essence of this thing that I am going to write to you about, almost in its entirety (no-one book that can be read even in several sittings, sessions, can adequately cover this impactful topic)...this thing we have come to know as "ANXIETY". A particular some-thing that has become a favorite pre-occupation throughout almost my whole career -- 47 years now as a professional, what's known in our field as a "Clinical Psychologist" (as in the response to a question a family, friend may have asked, on occasion, "where you heading?" I would respond "I have to go back, to the clinic, to check the answering machine, to make sure...") Which now, of course, resides in whatever device you are utilizing to read this. A thing in the form of a core feeling that I took notice of early on, but over the past few years, or about five years after the Pixar film "Inside Out" starred this thing, under the name of "FEAR", really got bruised and battered, whose good name (as the one that looks out, even defends us on occasion) got dragged through the mud, ever since that other thing, COVID, showed up on the scene. It at least deserves an adequate defense itself, one would think...
And, yes, I know that "Anxiety" does not really need an introduction, regardless of what stage of life you are in, as it's part of your daily life, virtually an everyday, day-after-day...experience. Episodes of which can be brief, almost unnoticed, until the after 'affects' are experienced, and eventually realized (as in "Eureka, I finally put 2 and 2 together, finally get why..."). And no two are quite the same...while there are some common de-nominators, there is always a degree of variability within as well as between "episodes" (kinda' like Netflix). And, while most are brief, remaining at a level of mere annoyance, others are really prolonged, highly disrupters! Like what you may be experiencing at this moment, a longer-than-necessary or at least undesirable length of time, taken up, almost consuming my day... Ergo, the word that captures the meaning as well as the experience as what's yet to come...in the upcoming release of "In Defense of Anxiety; anxiety in our defense"...this "Pro-longue", to be followed by at least a few paragraphs of the first chapter, "The Courting, of Anxiety"...in the next few days, to be followed, "in due course" by the full release, of the completed book.
And yes, just when you thought you knew everything there was to know about this thing...
