Erring our differences - “can’t take a joke?” J.K.
Add-vice column to aspiring punny people
No longer funny… out of the money (versus a comedian or one who writes for one…”right on the…!”)
Grating gratuitous… as in too much, in-your-face, crossing the lines of decency as well as categories - violence, sex, drugs…depicted by the reality show “The Wolf of Wallstreet” (guessing there was something worth waiting for, but I didn’t stay up for it)…
Historical hysterical… good humor and good taste always has been, is, will be, by product of good timing and knowing your audience. Ranging from those who engage in self-effacing (think Rodney, "I don't get no respect" Dangerfield), to one who called people inanimate objects (when Don Rickles came to a roast, everyone got fried..."you hockey puck!") to one whose humor was so sophisticated and nuanced, that it required (at least for me) to have a Webster's along with a Thesaurus on hand -- of course, I'm referring to the one and only writer of "The Misanthrope's Corner" sacking the most sanctimonious, parsing the pretentious among us (who isn't at times?), known in daily life as Florence King (RIP, along with Rodney, Don, and lots of other comedians I use to appreciate, before SNL got nasty...and too predictable for my tastes). Now, instead of coming to humor us, the "late night" types, if you don't get them, or even worse, disagree with them, get "You must just be a dumb - - ck!"
J.K. will be back... following a really long station break (you'd think we'd be used to it, by now). Let's see if he comes back with new material, doused with an ounce of humility. My advice - don't wait up...
