"Not sure if I've had the privilege, or the pleasure..." 

Proper introductions... are part of the larger social graces and norms for operating among what's sometimes called "polite company". Not only, as in exclusively, but especially, those who have been well socialized. Sometimes, in my experience a key identifier as to how someone has been raised. A lot has been made in recent years in identifying "people of color" - - more often, in my readings and watchings, by those who are trying to align themselves. In contrast with those trying to distance themselves from being a POP ("Person of Privilege", what else?) - - if you haven't lived it certainly you know of one. Well, while attending the same U-M that he hails from, I met a whole lot of them. And, as he described himself in both his student commencement speech (2007) and acceptance speech a few days ago, as his party's front runner...he may have glossed over how, flash to 2026, he's spent most of his adult years residing in an upper middle class community and high school, going to one of the most prestigious universities ("Harvard of the Midwest") and then went on a publicly funded (some of which were indirectly tied to various corporate giving, a bit of foreshadowing here, for effect) trip to Oxford (NOW we're talking ties with really old money) and on to med school...after which he proudly touts choosing public health rather than private practice. Which takes us to where we find him today. As in living in what is described as one of the more utopian communities, desirable destinations, where just about every graduate of U-M would like to live, in what we fondly called on homecoming a return to "Ann Arbor town". It's as if he never left...

If this doesn't add up to a life of privilege... then, as the class identifier goes, "The Pope's not Catholic" And, for Dr. El-Sayed's further instruction....("I've never taken a dollar of corporate money") one of the definitions offered up in Webster's is that "as a group, unified body of individuals...a collective" Which is what you get when you look up "corporation". This is where, whether in politics or "polite" conversation, the line blurs between what is public and private...domains. And, to finish with a flourish, a strong student should always check his sources. Bet you'll watch and listen closer, now. Should prove to be an interesting "class conscious" race. "Go Blue!"
